Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

If your certain you have not suffered an injury to the ankle, we can probably rule that out. If you were having an episode of congestive heart failure (CHF) you would experience swelling in BOTH lower extremities. So I believe we can safely rule that out as well.

I would be willing to bet you may be having a gout attack. Gout occurs when there is a build up of uric acid which form crystals in the joints rather than being excreted from the body with the urine. Your doctor should be notified so you can have your uric acid levels checked. Medications are often given for gout such as allopurinol or probenacid.

With gout you may also notice a redness or warmth to the touch on that right ankle.

In the meantime while you wait to go to your doctor you can try some home treatment. Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen may help reduce the pain and swelling. Warm compresses often help with some people, however others feel cold compresses are more effective (so use whichever feels better for you.) Also avoid food that are "high purine" foods. These foods include beef, pork, lamb, seafood, yeast, (used in beer and bread), alcoholic beverages, (particularly beer), and bacon.
