My left foot and ankle have been swelling for the past few days. I am a 45 yr old woman, with some heart valve irregularities. Should I assume the two are related? I have not recently been injured and it's only on the left side.

Heart failure as a result of heart valve irregularities can make the ankles swell but usually both ankles are invoved. Some other causes which makes only one ankle swell are :

  • gout and arthritis
  • lymphedema
  • varicose veins and venous insufficiency
  • pelvic pathology such as tumor in the pelvis

Cutting salt intake and elevate the leg can helps to bring the swelling down.
