What could be the cause of "swollen Ankle's?

Sent to Health Experts August 06 05:39 PM

Sometimes when standing or sitting for long periods of time, my ankle's swell up. Could it be kidney function, or Cardiac problem...How to figure out once and for all exactly why....will ease my mind and then I will be better able to try to correct the problem. I have been told that I may have a mild heart murmur, but I do not know for sure. From time to time I do get bladder infection's, and I was wondering if I need to check kidney function. Or what other reason could be the cause.
Thanks for your help,
Kathleen

Standing or sitting long period of time causes blood fluid come out from the capillaries and get collected inside the tissues due to a gravity pressure .Elevating the leg , cutting salt intake can take the swelling away. If does not get any better than heart , lung and kidney disease should be investigated.

Yes it can take long time . To make it go away fast your doctor can prescribe diuretic for you and you can wear support stockings.

It is happening to you because of some venous insufficiency in the leg veins . It can be genetic or it can happeh when the tiny valves in the veins get damaged and become loose in a way they can not hold the blood well inside the veins as a result of having had Deep vein thrombophlebitis (DVT).
