My girlfriend, 24 caucasian, is experincing severe fatigue and exhaustion. She is normally healthy and is normal in weight. She is a nurses aid and was able to take her blood pressure on several occasions. Tonight when she took it, it was 94/46 with a pulse of 51. Is this something we should be concerned with and seek medical attention?

Hello,

If your girlfriends blood pressure is normally not this low, then this is not a very good sign. Very low blood pressure like that of your girlfriend can cause less oxygen supply to the brain - probably the reason why she is so fatigued and exhausted. The pulse being very low is an indication that her heart is beating slower than normal. Did she take any medicines recently?

Whatever the cause may be, she needs immediate treatment to increase the blood supply to the brain as well as to the other parts of the body. Please take her to the ER for the necessasry treatment. She may faint from the decreased blood supply from the heart if treatment is delayed.

I hope this helps.

Reply to Dr.M.D.Mazumdar, MD(O's Post: I appreciate your rapid response. The only reason I have not taken her to the ER is because this has been going on for about a week with the same circumstances. She has had no lightheadedness or dizziness. She does suffer from extreme stubborness, however. :) She has not been on any medications recently and does not take illegal drugs. We both drink, but not exsessive. She does have iron deffiecent anemia. Does this add more light?

Hello,

While iron deficiency anemia can cause fatigue and exhaustion, it does not cause a drop in blood pressure or in the pulse rate. In fact anaemia is more likely to increase the pulse rate as the heart struggles to send oxygen to the peripheral regions of the body.

If your girlfriend has always had normal blood pressure and a normal pulse rate, and the decrease has only been around a week, I would advise you to get her thoroughly checked up, at least by her doctor if she is reluctant to go to the ER. It is also possible that she is suffering from acute dehydration.

Most of the causes of low blood pressure are related to the heart or the thyroid gland - and needs to be treated at the earliest.
