Normajean,
I can see why you are concerned about your husband's health issues.
Whenever cleaning us animal feces or urine you should always protect your repiratory tract. Rats carry always carry a low grade infection for which they do not show any symptoms at all. When they leave their feces and urine behind, it is aerosoled into the air as it dries.
The Haanta virus which is a virus caused by inhaling the contaminated excrement. At the very least, inhaling the excrement certainly can cause the symptoms that your husband complains and has the potential to cause a temp and diarrhea.
The chest discomfort that you mentioned can be due to respiratory infection, but heart issues cannot be ruled out.
I feel that it would be in his best interest to take your him to the doctor for evaluation. Respiratory and heart evaluation as well as medication may need to be prescribed.
I hope that I have helped in resolving your concerns, but if there is anything else I can help with, please let me know.
