I'm a 50 year old female, 5/1" 160lbs, and recently have been noticing what seems to be heart "palpitations" (pounding and/or rapidness or "skipping"?), which then triggers a shallow cough; also heart pounding with light exercise, breathlessness, fatigue. I think I'm too young for serious heart problems. My mom age 79 started having circulatory and heart related problems just a few years ago, but some of my symptoms seem simlilar to what she had described when her problems began at age 74. I know I'm currently approx 25 lbs overweight, but other than that I don't believe I have any risk factors and have never had any health problems. I did diet/exercise and lose approx 30 lbs about 5 years ago (which I've since gained back), and had taken diet pills with ephedrine at that time. Since I've never been sick I don't have a regular MD, and haven't seen my OB/GYN for awhile. Can be symptoms be related to something less "scary" than a heart problem, ie something related to pre-menopause?

Hello,

It is more likely that you symptoms are due to the beginning of a heart problem than a menopausal symptom. The points in favour of a heart problem is your age, your weight and that you have a positive family history of a heart problem. Palpitations triggering off a cough is one of the first symtoms of a heart problem.

I realise that you would feel better if you were to be told that your symptoms are due to premenopause, but i am afraid that the truth remains that this is unlikely.

Please consult an MD in medicine or a Cardiologist rather an an OB-gyn for a more accurated diagnosis.
