it started in my lower calf with bumps like small marbles ...

Sent to Health Experts September 24, 2007 7:50 p.m.

it started in my lower calf with bumps like small marbles on the side of the muscle and would cause severe pain behind the knee and makes it hard to walk without pain i can massage the bumps and press hard on them to make them go away and relieve the pain now it is moving up the leg firther with the bumpsand it gets it engaged quicker if i just stand in one place any length.   i have been told its muscle spasms ,and am taking pills for it but it doesnt help, also it helps to lie in bed then they go away ...i also have tried wearing compressin hose and it helps very little,i have had my back adjusted and that didnt help, would like your opinion of what causes it or what i can do to relieve it,hopelly for good ive had it now for a bout four months and it gets worse, thank you my e-mail is golferbob2@verizon .net

Have you been checked for varicose veins or any other vascular problem?

the bumps are on the muscle below the knee on the side sometimes on both sides and also bove the knee on the side of the muscle and not behind the knee. behind the knee is where the pain gets so severe, the bumps are hard and then i press on them until it goes awaw and then i go to the next bump in which they arent visible i have to feel for them along side the muscle.today i have compression hose on from the ankle to about 4" above the knee and in the last 4 hours i havent had any pain yet. but that only disguises the pain ,im try to find out what the cause is, i thank you for your patience

Dear sir,

Thank for your reply, and for your patience as well. A couple things come to mind. The first was varicose veins, as the can be painful, and the pain is relieved a bit by elevating them and wearing compression stockings. I kind of prefer the trouser socks that are sold at the drugstore, they seem to be less constricting and nobody knows you are wearing them. I know you said you don't think these are the culprit, so that leads me to my next thought, a peripheral aneurysm. It is an outpouching of an artery in the leg, due to a weakened wall. It forms a blister of sorts. It can be diagnosed by an ultrasound. If this is the problem, it is not serious in it doesn't rupture. On the other side, if it does, it can cause massive bleeding. Have you had an ultrasound of your leg? If not, it might be a good idea. It will help to diagnose these "bumps." Also, if aneurysms run in your family, or if you have a history of high blood pressure, the pain in your calves could be a warning sign to an abdominal aneurysm.

I hope this helps you, if not, please let me know and I will investigate this further.
