Question

Last month I had severe abdominal pain and bathroom

Sent to Health Experts April 15, 2006 9:43 p.m.

Last month I had severe abdominal pain and bathroom problems. My symptoms consisted of severe abdominal cramping on the lower left side, diarreha, constipation, and dizziness. At one point I even had a swelling the size of a golf ball on the lower left side of my abdomin, and I was given medicine to treat a bacteria. It seemed to have worked until I discovered blood in my stool recently and I'm very concerned. Is this something I should be worried about such as cancer? I have no insurance and can't afford to go back to the doctor. Please help!

REPLIED Check Mark

Without an actual examination and/or possible colonoscopy would be hard to determine what is going on.

Bleeding from the anal area can be due to rectal_bleeding or Gastrointestinal Bleeding

(click the links above for more information)

Another possible reason could be hemorrhoids as well. (which you could use a mirror or if there is someone you trust enough to have them take a look.

Not sure how much blood or how often this is occurring, but if a lot needs to be investigated.

You don't state your age, but I wouldn't think cancer at this point, but then I don't know again, how often the bleeding is occurring etc. Perhaps for an idea as well, bright red blood usually suggest that the blood is coming from the lower part of the GI tract (large bowel or rectum).

I'm a 23 year old female, the bleeding has only happened once so far and it was actually in the stool and not just on the toilet tissue. The blood was a bright red color and continued to bleed 20 minutes after I used the restroom.

Then chances are Hun, this is more related to possible hemorrhoid and with it only happening once, is nothing I would worry about. Is very common with what you had described earlier in your original question.

So between the constipation and diarrhea as well, these can occur, which it may have popped causing it to be in your stool. Now obviously if this is something that continues, then you will need to be seen for further evaluation.

Just make sure you keep an eye out for any other blood. In case this is related to the hemorrhoids this can occur due to inadequate intake of fiber, sitting too long on the toilet, straining to have a bowel movement, hard stools.

Below are two excellent sites that explain about Hemorrhoids as well and what can cause and treatment along with prevention.

Did you have a hard bowel movement? Often when blood appears on the outside of your stool, it could be from an anal fissure.

An anal fissure is a small tear or cut in the skin lining the anus which can cause pain and/or bleeding.
