Hi: I am a long distance runner. Towards the end of my training for a marathon in Oct., I noticed blood in my feces. I know blood in urine for long distance runners is typical. However, didn't know about the poop issue. Well, I am training again and it's back. Any suggestions? Starting to freak me out!

Hello,

It is possible that you have an internal hemorrhoid.

Hemorrhoid is caused by engorged veins at the lower end of the rectum and anus. In many people they may not produce any symptoms, while in others there may be blood during passing stool.

In your case, I suspect that constant friction of the veins as well as the jogging movement of the rectum for a long time (as after running after a long time) is causing the engorged veins to leak blood. A rise of the abdominal pressure can also contribute to the veins becoming more engorged and bleeding.

You need to be examined by a proctologist (a doctor who specializes in diseases of the rectum and anus). Other causes of bleeding while passing stool are rectal or anal polyps, diverticula, any growths etc. But, since in your case, it happens only after running, I suspect that hemorrhoids are the cause your bleeding.

You can try applying Anusol suppositories every night for 7 nights to cause constriction of the veins and stimulate healing. But an examination by a proctologist will be the best course of action to take.

I hope this helps.

Hello,

No, hemorrhoids do not hurt. Pain only occurs when there is infection.

The main symptom of hemorrhoids is 'painless bleeding while passing stool'. If there is any pain, there is either infection, or other conditions like fistula in ano need to be suspected.

I hope this helps.
