For the past 2 1/2 weeks, my newborn is having trouble having a BM. He began having BM after each feeding and suddenly stopped for 4 days. Finally, he just exploded with a massive amount of diarrhea. It still isn''t regular. I''ve called the pediatrician''s office but they say it is common and to give him prune juice. For the past 4 days, he hasn''t had a BM, has foul smelling gas constantly, strains & strains without success. He has what I''ve read to be an umbilical hernia as well (he was born 5 weeks early) and I hear his stomach gurgling. Also, his eating habits have changed. He eats less at each feeding, and more frequently! I''m worried he may have a bowel obstruction. What should I look for?

Hello Valantino,

It sounds like constipation instead of a bowel obstruction.

If your little one had a bowel obstruction he would be vomiting and screaming constantly.

Continue with the prune juice and try pear juice too.

His eating is less because there isn't much room for food due to the constipation.

If he is on a vitamin with iron that could be causing the problem too.

By all means though use your mom instincts and if you feel that this is something more don't hesitiate to return to the doctor because they can do an xray.

Best wishes,

Macy
