About 3-4 months ago I had a mole on my shoulder which became very itchy. Unfortunately I scratched it and it bled. Because I suffer with eczeme I thought this might be the problem.I have now been left with a larger flat patch of skin, which has a slight pucker in the centre, almost like a burn mark. I also have a constant dull ache in my shoulder and it is still very itchy. I now have a mole on the other shoulder, very small, but this is also itching and has a small scab on it. Do you think I should get further advice from my GP. I really don't want to bother him unnecessarily or him to think I am a hyponchondriac, as I already have to attend for diabetes clinic, hiatus hernia and hypertension medication, not to mention the rather frequent bouts of cellulitis I seem to get. Any advice you give would be much appreciated. Many thanks. Carole Brimming

Unfortunately in this country you cannot refer yourself to a dermatologist, you have to go through your GP who will then write and you subsequently get a letter some weeks later giving you a hospital appointment, usually about 3 months ahead. Given this, do you think I would be better to try and pay privately for a consultation with a dermatologist or could it wait for three months for a hospital appointment?

I am familiar with the NHS - having spent 10 months in England (Winchester) while I was in medical school.

I do believe that it should be looked at urgently - HOWEVER, I think it is very reasonable to see your GP initially. Since I am unable to examine you - it is impossible to determine if this may be a skin cancer. Your GP should be able to assist you with this problem - and if the need is urgent, make a referral to the appropriate consultant within the NHS (or privately)
