"Is it an emergency?" That is a difficult question to answer without examining you. An umbilical hernia can indeed become incarcerated or strangulated (where a small loop of the intestine becomes trapped inside the hernia) eventually leading to lack of blood supply and a true surgical emergency.

If the lump is tender, will not reduce (the lump goes away when you gently press on the area), or the pain is severe - YES, you should be seen in an emergency room to determine if this is a true emergency which may require immediate surgery.
