I have a hurnia...my question is how does it feel when you are in trouble with it. Right now I am having a lot of pain in my back and sides. I am nausious, but my stomach is growling like it is digesting. I just don't feel well today.

Can you please let me know what to look for to know if this is an emergency.

A strangulated hernia has pain always present followed quickly by tenderness and sometimes symptoms of bowel obstruction (nausea and vomiting). If your hernia suddenly becomes painful, tender, and irreducible, you should also go to the emergency department. Strangulation of intestine within the hernia sac can lead to gangrenous bowel in as little as 6 hours.
