I seem to have gotten a small hernia during a coughing bout. I don't really know what kind of hernia. A knot is above the belly button, gets bigger after eating, gets smaller. Does it really have to be surgically fixed or will some kind of exercising help?

Only a physician can determine whether or not surgery will be required to fix your hernia. It is most likely an umbilical hernia. This type of hernia is usually associated with infants but occur in adults as well.

The risk with a hernia is incarceration - when a part of your intestine pops through and is squeezed to the point of not getting oxygen. This can cause tissue damage and may become very dangerous or life-threatening.
