What you could be feeling is stool that has collected in the section of bowel that is found in this area. It is the largest part of the colon and people can frequently feel the full intestine because this is where stool is the most formed.

However, it could also be a small hernia. A hernia is where a loop of bowel finds its way through a tear in the abdominal wall. Sometimes they can have no pain involvement. Do you feel it more when you bear down as in a bowel movement? If this lump doesn't go away after a bowel movement or two, I would get it checked by the MD. If the hernia is allowed to get bigger, it can cut of circulation to the section of bowel or cause an obstruction. This can be life threatening.

Reply to Shyla's Post: Shyla,
I do feel it get a little tender during those moments of constipation or gas but since changing diet it definetly is not as frequent. The knot is the same size that its been and the constipation and stuff started about 2 months ago and that is when I noticed this knot. But it has not grown and is not bothersome since diet change. Also, a few days ago I had a movement that was extremely large and very time consuming as if things had been built up for years but is now getting releived. Sorry about the grapics!

I would get this knot checked because it hasn't changed. Perhaps, its time for a colonoscopy to check for hernias, polyps and rarely colon cancers. However, you may have diverticulitis, an inflammation of the ridges of the intestine. You are at the age that these tests should be done every 5 years. Its a simple procedure, you won't remember it and may times if they find something, they can treat it on the spot.

Don't worry about the graphics. They are useful and nothing really phases me anymore after being a nurse for a while!

Take care!
