I've had cronic diarea for over 5 weeks. Had cultures done and they came back negative. First I feel like I have gas, then a small stomach cramp, then I need to find a restroom. It burns from what I assume is stomach acid. And I am raw.

Amodium, etc. doesn't even touch the problem.

Have another doctor's appointment this following Wednesday, but everyday this goes on is a pain in the _ _ _!

Any clue as to the possible cause?

Thanks,
Rick Allison

1). Not yet. No insurance. Seeing VA clinic next week.

2). Yes. Hiatel Hernia & Acid Reflux. (6) MI's.
    # 4 DOA @ ER. Totally turned my body chemistry upside down.

3). Was taking Protonix but with no insurance.....too expensive. Went back to Prilosec OTC until I see VA.

Lots of other additional history.

You have to request to be seen by a Gastroenterologist. Certain infections can occur in the gastrointestinal system that will not show up in stool cultures. Since you have a history of hiatus hernia and acid reflux, you need to have multiple sights in your stomach and intestines both biopsied and cultured. A Gastroenterologist can do all of this and is more qualified for this type of problem.

For now, you should cut out all dairy, coffee, spicy foods, alcohol and anything that contains high sugar since these foods and drinks can worsen diarrhea. Only eat whole grain products and multi-grain products which will help add bulk to the bowel movements instead of just having diarrhea. Any fruit juices that you may be drinking should be diluted with water.

Try keeping eating and drinking to a minimum for a day and see what happens but you definitely to see a Gastroenterologist to have a lower and upper endoscopy done. They do these procedures at the VA hospital. You also need to have your electrolytes checked to make sure that you don't have a sodium or potassium loss due to the chronic diarrhea.

Hope my answer has been helpful and the problem is soon resolved!

Thank you very much for your assistance. I thought there might be something "OTC" that may relieve the condition, even alittle, until I got to the VA clinic.

I work at night on the road and it's difficult, to say the least" to find a facility exactly when you are in need.

Not happy to hear about doing upper & lower GI's.
The "Joys of Life!!!!"

However, your answers & reinforces what we have been finding about the problem.

Once again.......Thanks!
