my husband has had 4 incidences in the last 6 months where he is either eating or drinking and starts choking to the point his eyes roll back in his head and he stops breathing. On 2 occassions it was a simple sip of water. He has had a throat scope and a barium test done. The barium test showed a hiatal hernia just off his esphogus but didnt' seem concerned by it. All they gave him was a script for prilosec. I know this can't be from just acid reflux. Its like his esphogus closes and he can't breath. I have witnessed 3 of the 4 while a nurse at the local VA hospital witnessed one. In his late 20's he was involved in a serious car accident and was in the hospital for a month. They did have him on a breathing tube for a while. He is now almost 60. What else can i suggest to his doctor. They don't seem to think its a big issue, but I do. This could happen while driving, doing yard work, or someplace I can't get to him.

Hi,

Based upon your history this seems either to be syncope induced by severe reflux .Other possibility being Laryngospasm .

Also since he is suffering from GERD and hiatus hernia this can be a possibility in this case .

Also GERD is known to cause severe laryngospasm also .Laryngospasm is a brief spasm of the vocal cords.A laryngospasm happens suddenly . During the episode you may experience great difficulty breathing through the upper airways in your voice box (larynx).
