I was just reading about an HIV test that uses oral swabs rather than a blood sample. Is this an accurate means of detection - more so than a blood sample? I'm also curious why don't hospitals and doctor's offices use the oral swab method? Thanks. My partner and I are considering testing so any information would be appreciated.

Hi Rachel

It is a fairly new technique so it is taking awhile to catch on. Since it is so new, the jury is still out on whether or not it is more or less effective than a blood test. I do know that DNA is successfully detected via this method, but it's still fairly new in the HIV arena.

Hope that helps,

Kerry
