I have been diagnosed with a yeast infection in my esophogus. How common is this? My GI told me it could indicate HIV which really scared me. My PCP told me it could simply be a side effect of recent antibiotics.

Hi

It's not that uncommon.

It certainly can be a side effect of anti-biotis.

It can occur in full blown AIDS ( different from being HIV +ve) along with other significant infections.

If you feel you are at risk of HIV - get a test.
If not I personally wouldn't bother.

Hope this helps.

Please ask for any clarification if required.

Thank you, Al. I had my PCP draw blood for testing since the GI scared me so much. However, I have no other syptoms so I will guess it is from the medication. Are there other early syptoms indicating HIV?

No

Generally HIV infection has no symptoms ( flu like sero-conversion illness early on ).

Some people need to learn better communication skills and appreciate that patients can be profoundly affected by what Drs say to them.

Would you like some further info on HIV?

That would be great! By the way, I will NOT be using the GI who treated me again. Thanks for the additional HIV info.

This site is fairly comprehensive and not too technical.
