Sent to Health Experts August 18 01:43 AM

What problems could result by having surgery (total thyroidectomy) under general anaesthesia with known infiltrates throughout both lungs?

It would depend on the cause of lung infilterates (whether acute or chronic) and your functional lung capacity & lung reserves. This can be assesed by spirometry or simple clinical tests like breath holding and single breath count. If you have no acute infection and a good lung condition then probably ther eis no significant additional risk for the surgery. The best assessment would be done preop by the anesthesiologist,

Reply to Gaurav Gupta's Post: It was acute. Could a pulmonary fibrosis with pulmonary vasculitis result from going under the general anesthesia while having infiltrates throughout both lungs. Both doctors missed the report from radiology that sat in their office 2 days prior to surgery recommending a high resolution CT scan of my lungs. I never had a lung condition before the surgery aside from them "just" finding the infiltrates. Prior xrays, CT's, & ultrasounds proved negative. Post surgery...I woke up with a lung disease as listed above. Is it possible....I believe it is.

p.s. I just had lung biopsies which confirmed their initial diagnosis. I am almost 3 weeks post op having had the VATS procedure. Now recuperating...I'm only 40 years old. I wasn't prepared for this...Please give me your thoughts on this. Thank you...
