Question

I have extreme vaginal pain. What could be wrong?

Sent to Health Experts March 21, 2006 9:21 a.m.

I have had a bladder/kidney infection since before Thanksgiving. I was hospitalized on Christmas for three days. Now I cannot have sexual intercourse because if feels like it is tearing me inside my vagina. I have had CT scans..no stones. I had a cytopic(spelling?) that did not show anything and I have been on several (7-9) different antibiotic, some twice. I still have the same problem and more. I am getting tired of going to two different Doctors and them not finding out what is wrong. I even have good insurance.

Optional Information:

Hi,
There are various causes for vaginal pain or discomfort during xesual intercourse-

  • Primary causes- Inadequate lubrication or dry vagina causes lot of discomfort during sexual intercourse. The treatment is artificial lubricants. Another cause is infection of vagina or urinary infection. That can be ruled out for you since you have been adequately treated for that.
  • Secondary cause- This includes vaginismus i.e. vaginal contraction reflex on touching the vagina. The treatment is basically vaginal exercises and and vaginal dilatation exercises.

If you feel that you have a dry vagina, you can try various lubricants. But if that is not a problem then you should see your doctor with for the treatment of vaginismus.

Dr. Gupta,

Nevertheless, I still have a terrible smell when I urinate, and sometimes pain and burning. I do not appear to have any dryness in my vagina. When my husband tries to insert his penis, it feels like he is tearing me. I still have pain in my kidneys and my pelvic area. I had a complete hysterectomy 12 years ago and I am not a frigid woman. Is this the symptoms that I should have?
