A staph infection is caused by staphylococcus aureus, a
bacterium. This can occur anywhere in the body, usually entering
through an opening such as a wound or the entrance point of a
catheter. The problem is that we have developed resistant strains
of the organism and the usual antibiotics are not always
effective. We used to use Methicillin, but now there is a
resistant strain called "MRSA" or methicillin resistant staph
aureus. For this we generally start with vancomycin and can add
rifampin if necessary. There is also an ointment that is helpful
for surface wounds such as tracheostomies and PEG sites. This is called
mupiricin. Hope this is what you needed. Sometimes it takes
