I have a new boyfriend and we've recently started having sex. We've both been sexually active before. After the 1st time we had sex I had soreness on my vulva and after a couple days I had a yeast infection which cleared with OTC medication. Every time we have sex now my vagina gets very sore and more recently it has started swelling after sex. I've never had problems with lubrication during sex before and now there are times when I am not able to produce enough lubrication, or the lubrication is very thick and sticky. The other day the skin on my boyfriend's penis was swollen below the head after sex. He thought he may have had a reaction to the condoms, which were a type he hadn't used before. Could my problems be caused by the condoms also, or is it more likely that I may have an infection? However, we don't always use condoms and I'm always sore after sex. I saw my doctor about 2 weeks after the 1st time we had sex for a pap smear and everything was normal. She suggested that I may be having a reaction to a detergent, but I don't see how this is possible as I am using the same detergent I always have used and I don't think it's coincidental that this began after having sex with a new partner.

It may not be related to the condoms, it may, however, be an infection that you need to have reviewed by your doctor. Because the both of you have had sex with other partners, and you have had unprotected sex, you should have an STD swab done by your doctor to rule out a sexually transmitted disease than can cause the symptoms you are experiencing. Most likely, if you speak with your doctor and express your concern, he/she will put you on a round of antibiotics to clear up the infection (your partner will most likely be treated, too) while the lab results are out. A papsmear will only rule out abnormal or cancerous cells on your cervix, it will not tell you whether you have a sexually transmitted disease or not.
