The top of my 2 month old son's thumb was cut while clipping his nails. It bled a lot before pressure was finally able to stop the bleeding. He didn't cry at all, but it still has me upset. What is my next step, and do I need to take him to his pediatrician for a tetnus shot?

I don't think I know any mother (including myself) that has not slipped with the clippers at least once. It is scary and sometimes bloody, but you handled it just right, and he sounds like a born trooper! Next you should:

Wash your hands well.
Wash the cut area well with soap and water, without scrubbing, then let the water from the faucet run over the cut for several minutes. A bandaid is probably not necessary, and can hurt infant skin. Cover the hand with a mit, to prevent sucking on the thumb. Check the area each day and keep it clean and dry. Don't blow on the area or kiss it better, as this can cause germs to grow. Don't use any ointment without talking to the Doctor first.

DTP (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) vaccine is a routine childhood immunization.
Infants typically begin DPT at two months (then at four, six, and 15-18 months of age with a booster dose at 4-6 years)> If he has had his first dose, keep him on scedule. If not, you can call his Doctor to see if he wants to begin the series.

Signs of infection such as increased warmth, redness, swelling or drainage would also require a visit.

Good luck to you both, I hope this helped.
