Question

I have had a bladder infection on and off for ...

Sent to Health Experts May 30, 2006 8:08 p.m.

I have had a bladder infection on and off for several years and have been treated with various meds. The symptoms go away but reappear later. Recent cultures show ecoli and I have been on a 10 day regime of nitrofurantoin-macro 100 mgmyl. A recent cat scan showed negative. The symptoms reappeared after 10 days and I'm now on a 14 day regime of the same.
Is this med the correct one and since I have had so many meds to address this problem, could I be becoming tolerant and need a higher dose and/or for a longer period of time??

Hello

You need to ask for the e.coli to be cultured so that it can grow in a petri dish. They can then test it for which antibiotic will work best for the particular strain of e.coli. There are more and more antibiotic resistent organisms of all types popping up every day. You may need a different antibiotic, or one for twice as long.
