Question

bad sun burn

Sent to Health Experts June 09, 2006 2:19 p.m.

On tuesday morning I was in the sun too long and got a bad sunburn on my legs and stomach. its now friday and they have not improved at all. they itch and feel warm to the touch and are very red. also, on wednesday morning i had a booster shot (measels) and was given an antibiotic (bactrim) for a UTI. could these medications be affecting the rate of healing of my burn? i also have terrible headaches? are these from the burn or from a possible reaction to the antibiotic? when i told my doctor about the headaches i told him i thought they were b/c of the bactrim and he told me to stay on it for another day or two. but he doesnt know about the sunburn. is there anythikng i can do to help the burn heal? it hurts a lot and is incredibely uncomfortable. the headaches can be temporarily relieved with aspirin but the burn is my greatest concern right now. and im taking acidophylous pills becuase the antibiotic gave me a yeast inefection! i hate that im taking all of these medications and i fear that they are not helping my burn.
thank you,
alexandra

There are a number of problems all at once here. Depending on the degree of the sunburn, it can take several days to improve. It will also go through stages of peeling and blistering depending on your skin type.

Symptomatic things to do are the aloe vera gel that you are using already, cold, damp towels to help take the heat out and calamine lotion is very cooling when applied to mild sunburn.

Other factor of sunburn is dehydration and this can contribute to the headaches so drink 2 litres (4 pints ) of water each day. Ibuprofen or tylenol may be helpful too.

There is a possibility that the Bactrim could contribute to erythema (redness of the skin) but this would be hard to pin down.

In addition, if you were experiencing an allergic or immune response to the measles shot, this could also explain the redness and increased body temperature.

A perfume free moisturiser should be used on the skin to encourage hydration and this will also help with healing but if there is any sign of secondary infection (yellow crusts or pus) then see your doctor again.

This will improve, but you need to allow time, think of the sunburn in the same way as a first degree burn from a fire or other accident. These take several days to heal, and need to be monitored too.
