A week ago my girlfriend was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. This evening will having intercourse she got a sharp pain in her vagina. We stoped and now she is having bad pains running from her belly button to her vagina. I would like to know if this is related to her UTI or a sign of something else?

This does not sound related to pain that is experienced with a urinary tract infection, it could be related to her ovary or even her tubes if she is having pain extending from the belly down to the vaginal area. If she has been taking her antibiotics as prescribed then she should not be seeing any pain or urgency related to the urinary tract infection unless the infection has gone into her bladder. I would recommend in case the antibiotics have not been strong enough or it could be related to her tubes or ovary that she be seen if the pain continues to increase. At the very least she needs to phone her physician and let them know of the new symptom that she is experiencing as I know they will most likely want to see her for furhter evaluation.

She took her last antibiotic pill this evening and she hasn't had any discomfort from the UTI since being treated. If it is a problem with her ovary or tubes what could be the wrong with either of them that would cause this? The pain hasn't got any worse but it is still very uncomfortable and painful for her.

In some cases it can be painful when she is passing an egg through her fallopian tube, and can cause uncomfortable feelings in the area from the belly down toward the vagina, but if the pain continues to increase it could be a blighted ovum, where the ovary can become twisted and cut off the circulation which can cause an extreme amount of pain so you should monitor her carefully and should her pain level increase it would be best to have her seen again by her physician. Especially since she has not had any pain or discomfort with the urinary tract infection.

She didn't have any prior discomfort in that area. If it was just an egg passing or a blighted ovum would sex aggrevate this or cause the pain to start? She had her period about two weeks ago. At the time she was on birth control. She is not any longer. When she had her period last her flow wasn't as normal. It was thicker and more like globs of blood. Could this be a sign of anythin?

No most likely it was not the sexual intercourse that aggravated this but the abnormal cycle could suggest a change on hormones due to stopping the birth control and the difference in her cycle could have caused the pain she is experiencing as well. It could also be a sign of a pelvic inflammatory infection as well which causes an abnormal cycle, pain and discomfort in the abdomen, and bleeding or pain with intercouse so this is something to consider as well. I fher pain continues she should be seen for another pelvic examination but if it was the egg passing or blighted ovum the sexual intercourse would not have aggravated it, it just can come on at any time.
