3 weeks ago I had swollen glands, vomiting and nausea along with a terrific headache. Doctor said it was a viral bug of some sort. Lasted for 5 days. When that subsided, pain in my shoulder and left arm along with swelling and pain in left hand 1st finger joint. Sometimes the arm is affected. Tried ice and heat, have had no relief. Shoulder actually burns at times, on top of the shoulder. Feels like it is in the joint. I am 51, diabetic, female, very active....any advice

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 51

Already Tried:
ice, heat, ibuprofen

I think you should be seen again. Your symptoms are unusual, certainly, for someone who has just come off of a resolving viral illness. Most viral "stomach flus" (like it sounds like you had) are handled by the immune system without any additional symptoms.

Your symptoms, and the fact that you are diabetic (this means that your immune system isn't generally as strong as most people's without diabetes), make me concerned that this might be something more involved. Certain bugs can lead to joint infection and arthritis, and your symptoms are concerning for this. If an illness like this progresses to involve the joints, it requires more aggressive treatment because the body is not terribly efficient at eradicating infections within the joints by itself. Antibiotics might very well be in order, and certainly you need a good exam, workup, and testing.

So call your physician that you saw, tell them about your shoulder pain and joint pain and inflammation now, and that you want to be seen today. The faster someone sees you, the faster antibiotics can be started, for if the infection is in the joint(s) then this is an urgent situation.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions - I'm more than happy to help. Take care - Dr. Fay

Relist:
Thanks to your advice, I went to my physician who sent me to a rheumatologist who thinks the infectios bug I had triggered some arthritis inflammation and started me on 40 mg of Prednisone to knock down the swelling and we will re-evaluate after 7 days. The swelling went down but is not gone and the finger joint is still sore but I can now bend it and pick things up. That's what happens when you hit the magic age of 51....it all starts going downhill :)
