My 2 year old appears to have a stye on his eyelid and I've been using a medicine called "stye" for at least 4 days and it doesn't go away. I think it actually got bigger and it looks like it is going to pop but it doesn't. I read about the warm compresses but he is 2 and it is hard enough getting near his eye. He gets them frequently and I think he started getting them after a mosquito bite on the eyelid got infected. Is that the cause for that? What can I do to get rid of it or prevent it?
Thank you,
Karen Barichak

A sty forms when bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus infect one of the tiny oil glands at the base of an eyelash. The infection produces a tender, red, pus-filled bump or boil.

You can take him to a doctor or to an Emergency room. He may need antibiotic ointment to the eye or antibiotic by mouth. In rare cases if the treatment fails then the sty to be opened and drained by the surgical means. In the mean time apply a clean, warm (not hot), wet washcloth to your baby's infected eye. Although he'll probably wiggle and resist you, try to hold the compress in place for ten to 15 minutes at a time, and repeat three or four times a day. The process can go more smoothly if you apply the compress when he's asleep or distracted by a feeding. The heat will draw the pus to the front of the sty, so it can break open and drain.
