Hi,
I am 19, and for the past 5 or 6 months I have noticed that maybe once a month, some times I wont experience it for 2 or 3 months, I will experience a burning sensation after I have finished. It will last maybe 3 or 4 minuets and slowly go away. Also when that happens I notice that my urine is cloudy. I have not been sexually active in over a year. I dont feel any pain or any discomfort other than these moments. Im not urinating any more than usual, and it isnt a weak stream. I also have trouble starting a lot. If someone is in the room sometimes it is hard to start, but once they leave I have no problems, so i think that is something in my head. I am just curious to know what this could be, its just more annoying than anything else.

Hello,

Burning with urination can be attributed to a UTI(urinary, tract infection which can be treated with antibiotics after your doctor performs a urine test to determine if you do have an infection. Sometimes cloudy or dark colored urine is also a sign of a UTO.

Always make sure to drink plenty of water and if you like cranberry juice, that is very helpful.

You are correct, not being able to urinate in front of others is called a "Bashful Bladder" and it is psychological.

If however, you have difficulty starting the stream along with burning, this could also be a sign of infection.

Let me know if you have questions.

Left untreated a UTI can linger. Some people are more prone to UTI than others. I would suggest making an appointment with a urologist the next time you notice the symptoms.

In the mean time, it would be helpful to always drink plentyof water and if you like cranberry juice, drink as much as you can.

DON'T use the kind of juice that says "Juice Cocktail" on the label. That has too much sugar and is not concentrated enough with cranberries. Make sure the cranberry juice is 100% juice, many brands are now 100% cranberry. Quality cranberry juice produces hippuric acid in the urine which acidifies the urine and prevents bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder. If pure cranberry juice is not available, cranberry capsules can be substituted. They can be found in most health food stores. Always take these with a large glass of water.

Vitamin C may also be recommended for you to take. If you get help right away, a UTI should completely clear up within 10 days to 2 weeks. You may be advised to avoid sexual intercourse until the symptoms have been gone for 2 weeks, which allows the inflammation to disappear completely.
