Hello - I've been diagnosed with Chlamidia and was given antibiotics on Friday 8/25. I am bleeding, it's basically like I have my period. Is this normal to conitnue since now the antibiotics have been in my system for 2 days? i did call my dr. on Saturday and told her i was bleeding, she said the bleeding had nothing to do with Chlamdia but to come in Monday so she could do an exam. i went online and at least 10 different web sites noted that there was irregular bleeding when you have this disease. If the bleeding is linked to the disease, how long will this symptom be present??

Hello,

It is imperative that you do not stop the antibiotics not unless you are instructed to do so my your doctor upon your exam on Monday.

Bleeding is not routinely associated with chlamydia. It can be present in some cases, but is not a usual symptom. I think that is more in keeping with what your doctor meant. Most women do not have bleeding with chlamydia, but it does occur.

What is important is to continue the antibiotics until it is determined the infection has cleared. The bleeding should gradually subside after the infection is gone.

I was only given 4 pills which was a one-time dose. I took all four as instructed. I've read where people have taken antibiotics for some time. As far as i kn ow this is all I need to take, hence my worry for continued bleeding. Any advice tomorrow before the exam??

It depends on which antibiotic you were prescribed on how long the treatment would be. Perhaps you were given Zithromax which is given for a shorter duration, Antibiotics can also be presribed to be taken for even five, seven or ten days.

When was the last time you had a pap smear? If you haven't had one recently, I would ask for one. If you have had a pap smear lately, I would still suggest that the doctor do a pelvic exam and of course examine your cervix.

Has your partner also been treated? This would be very important to avoid reinfection.

Chlamydia isn't hard to treat, it is hard to detect. Makes sure you make an appointment to go back and be re-tested in a frw weeks to assure the infection has cleared.

The last time I had a pap smear was 9/05 which was normal as was the last 5 or so years. When they did an examine last week the dr. did say that there were bumps around my cervix. I've never had this before and think that it's also from this disease. Could that be? I'm also currently taking Yasmin birth control and thought the bleeding could have come from a reaction to the antibiotic which was the Zi- something you mentioned in your reply. I am having another exam tomorrow but am scheduled for another pap on 9/6/06. My partner is also being tested and there is no intention of having sex until everything is ok.

The lesions can certainly be the culprit related to the bleeding. This condition is known as cervicitis. It is prevalent in those women that do exhibit a STD.

Here is some info:
