Hello: I have had x-rays, sonagrams and a scope procedure. After the scope procedure, the doctor advised that my right kidney is no longer functioning. We are to meet on September 5th and discuss the next step. He has already indicated that the kidney should be removed, due to possible infection. We have no idea how long this has been going on. I am 63 years of age and in good health. I do not take any precription drugs. My question is two fold: 1. What would make a kidney shut down and is that unusual? 2. Should the kidney be removed as a safety precaution.

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 63

Already Tried:
I ha x-rays, sonograms and scope procedure.

Reply to Dr AMIT MUNJAL's Post: Yes, I had a Renal and that infomation will be availaable to me along with the CBC when I meet with the docotor next week. I had a CT done in June 2006 and it showed a dark mass where the kidney is located. That is what started the investigation of the kidney. Also, some blood was discovered in the urine.

Hello

More often than not, determining the cause of such renal failure is difficult if not impossible. Even a kidney biopsy may be inconclusive, because all forms of kidney failure eventually progress to diffuse scarring and look the same on kidney biopsy. But some possible causes include Renal artery stenosis,Glomerulonephritis,Unilateral obstructive uropathy.

Depending upon the reports of renal function test and complete blood counts , if infection is found as cause of renal failure it should be removed as precautionary measure since Unilateral kidney removal does not clinically compromise even in healthy individual.
