i have a lump about the size of a 50 pence coin on the side of my left temple. Its only noticeable when pointed out but is getting larger and is now a tiny bit painful when pushed. What is around that area which could cause it. I have been to Dr and waiting to be seen by consultant.

Hello,

What you are describing may very well be a sebaceous cyst (otherwise known as a pilar cyst or a wen). The fluid filled cyst is degenerated keratin and sebum, which have been trapped inside. These cysts can sometimes get infected, and should not be pinched or squeezed.

Once infected, the sebaceous cyst can enlarge with fluid. If squeezed or pinched, the fluid within may cause the spread of the infected fluid to cause the formation of other cysts to the area.

I'm glad that you are seeing your physician for evaluation. He can detect if an infection is present, and whether or not this needs to be removed. He may also refer you to a dermatologist if he hasn't already.

Reply to Pamela's Post: thankyou for you professional reply. The Doctor did say that I may be given an MRI scan, so I think that the doctor did not think it may be a cyst. What else could it be?

Hello,

The bump on your temple area may possibly be a lipoma which is a fatty benign tumor. Generally lipoma's are slow growing and are not usually painful.

Since your doctor has examined you already and has referred you to a specialist for an MRI, I suspect that he want to confirm it to be a benign growth.

There are no lymph nodes in the area of the temple area that could be contributory to the lump. The fact that the lump is a bit painful certainly deserves further investigation. I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but the MRI will certainly be helpful and more definitive. I wish I could be more help but it sounds like you are in good hands.
