Hello. I have a question regarding vaginal bleeding. I am 1/2 way through my cycle but on vacation and forgot my birth control pills. Today is the 4th day not taking the pill. This morning I started heavily bleeding mostly brown, some red blood. I am tired and my stomach is killing me. I have stopped taking my pills before without this happening in the middle of the cycle and this never happened. There is a strong odor and I just don't feel right. Do you know what it could be?

Hello,

You are bleeding because you have not taken your pills and the level of the hormones, progesterone and estrogen in your blood has gone down. This is very normal. When you stopped taking your pills earlier, possibly it was only for a day or two - once you started again the level went up and you did not bleed.

The strong odor is probably due to a type of vaginal infection known as bacterial vaginosis. Please consult your doctor about it as you will need to take antibiotic pills.

I hope this helps.
