Question

78 year old woman with a very bad sore throat.

Sent to Health Experts September 14, 2006 9:51 p.m.

My Mom is 78 years old. She has a very bad sore throat. She is on an antibiotics that makes her sick to her stomach. She is refusing any food. I' m worried that she's getting dehydrated. This is the 2nd day she's been ill. All she wants to do is sleep. Should I get her pedialyte or should she go to the hospital. Also, do you know of an antibiotic for a sore throat like my Mom has that won't make her sick to her stomach. I'm very worried. I would appreciate it if you get back to me ASAP.

Thank you,

What concerns me is that she is 78 and refusing liquids or food. I am wondering why she was given antibiotics if she did not have a strep infection or an upper respiratory infection.

You can try to give her Pedilyte, but as it has been two days, you might consider calling her doctor or taking her to the ER.

Other than this sore throat, how is her overall health?

She's usually in good health. As I said she has a very bad sore throat. He throat hurt just a little the day before yesterday. Shouldn't she take antibiotics?

Is she does not have a strep infection, or upper respiratory infection, antibiotics would not be necessary.

What you could do is go out to a pharmacy, buy some Chloraseptic spray which woill help relieve the pain. Also purchase some Gatorade or Pedialyte.

As she is in good health, that is less worrisome. My concern was that she might be frail.

This has not been helpful. Her doctor prescribe antibiotics for her because she has an extremely sore throat.

I'm signing off. I'll go elsewhere and ask my question.
