Hello,

Sharp pains that increase on deep breathing is usually due to gas in the abdomen. When you take a deep breath, the diaphragm (a muscle separating the chest from the abdomen) pushes against the intestines dilated with gas and you feel pain.

Another cause for pain that radiates upwards could be due to pain from the gallbladder, either from an infection or stone in the gallbladder. A gallbladder that is not functioning well can also cause excessive gas to be formed in the intestines.

You will need to consult a doctor for an examination and ultrasonogram to rule out or confirm problems with the bladder. Meanwhile, you can take a GasX tablet (it is an OTC medicine) to absorb the gas. Also take an antacid called gelusil which can both decrease acidity (if any) and gas. Try sipping ice cold water to cool down the tissues and reduce gas formation.

If you have eaten highfibre food like beans or cabbage, this too could cause gas as the food ferments in the intestines. Please take an enzyme preparation available OTC for relief.

I hope this helps.
