Hello,

Keep the area clean and dry. Please apply Neosporin or Bacitracin ointment over the area and apply a bandaid over it.

Motrin 500 mg taken twice daily after food for 5 days will decrease the pain and inflammation.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply but how will that work? Because its not the outside that hurts. Its the inside where the ring goes through. If I push right on it (like the center) it hurts really bad. But if I leave it alone it doesnt bother me. The only other time is if I bend over. I was thinking of my flushing it with hydrogen peroxide. Would that be wise?

Hello,

If it doesn't bother you when you leave it alone, then the infection cannot be very deep or very serious. Hydrogen peroxide is used in open wounds or infected points where there is pus which needs to be removed. It will not be absorbed through the skin. Ointments like Neosporin are absorbed through the skin and can act on somewhat deeper infections. You can apply the ointment inside the bellybutton as deep as you can and leave it to be absorbed.

Motrin 500mg twice daily will also help to decrease the inflammation. Once the inflammtion decreases, your natural body immunity should be able to handle the infection.

I hope this helps.

What do you think could have caused this slight infection all of a sudden? I know this is going to sound like a silly question but how am I going to get the neosporin into the infected area? Should I use a q-tip to get it into the infected area or should I use the tip of the bottle and press as much neosporin in there? I hope that made sense.

Hello,

It is difficult to say exactly why the infection occurred. But it is possible some germs were picked while swimming or at any other time when the bellybutton was exposed.

You can use the q-tip to put in the neosporin in - but you will have to gentle and careful not to pushe it too inside. And it will be better to use an ointment reather tahn neosporin powder.

I hope this helps.

Okay I just received your reply the day after when began this discussion. I applied the neosporin directly in the piercing and it felt better when I woke up this morning. So I put the ring back in thinking everything was okay and also I was afraid it might close as well. Well a couple of hours later it seems to be hurting again. How long should I keep the ring out for? Also, what if I flushed it with rubbing alcohol? Do you think that is wise?

Hello,

You can keep the ring out for 5 days - the piercing will not close. You will be able to push the ring through. Rubbing alcohol can be used for flushing the bellybutton.

I hope this helps.
