My daughter was prescribed Cephalexin (Keflex) in pill form ...

Sent to Health Experts September 23, 2006 4:26 p.m.

My daughter was prescribed Cephalexin (Keflex) in pill form yesterday for an infection to some incisions from surgury. She is four years old and will not take the pill, she is scared. Can we open the pill and dilute it in juice or water?

Can I ask....

Is it a solid tablet or capsule?

Why was she not given the oral suspension?

It is capsule form and I don't know why she was not given oral medicine. It was the very end of the day and my daughter is really big for her age, maybe they forgot she is only four. Not sure.

I would request a new prescription for the liquid form as this will be better absorbed in a child. In the meantime you can certainly open up a capsule to ensure she starts the course. Its better mixed into apple puree, yoghurt or jam.

Can I just check what dose she has been given?

When you say she is big for her age, do you know her body weight? I would like to check the dose is appropriate.

Thanks

It was 250mg four times a day and my daughter (4 1/2 years) is 46 inches tall and 55 pounds. Thank you.

For her weight then the dose is not excessive. She may experience slight diarrhoea as with most antibiotics. When you break open the capsule you may lose some of the contents so she would not be getting full dose so do request the liquid form if you can.

Does this help?
