I have not been able to sleep for the last 4 days. when I lay down it is worse. My headache will not go away because of the coughing. I have no insurance, and little money. What can I do to get rid of this congestion?

The easiest and cheapest thing to help is to inhale steam twice or three times a day. Fill a bowl with very hot water (caution scalds!!) and lean over it with a towel over your head.

If you have shortness of breath with minimal exertion, eg walking up one flight of stairs, or even while sitting still. Or you cannot hold a converation then you need to see a doctor regardless of cost.

Stick with one cough mixture, If you have a cough with phlegm then you MUST use an expectorant. Ideally with gauiphenesin. If you use a cough supressant in this situation then your body is trying to get rid of the congestion, while the cough centre is supressed, Not a good combination.

Drink plenty of water. If it is a cold, or simple respiratory tract infection and you are normally in good health then this will get better over the next 5 days. If you are a smoker or have any chest pain on breathing in then you should see the doctor in this situation.
