Hello,
The main reason according to many scientists for premature graying of hair is genetic. if the parents grayed at an early age, then the children are likely to gray early too. Other causes are:
- Stress - Stress is believed to decrease the blood supply to the hair, cause death of the cells that produce pigment and cause early graying.
- Deficiency of nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamin B12 and zinc in the diet.
-Increasing pollution of the air, food and water.
- Smoking
- Infections like severe eczema.
-Illnesses like thyroid hormone disease, neurofibromatosis, vitiligo
It is believed that the number of gray hairs can decrease when the reason for stress is diminished and the diet is removed. But, I am afraid, most research point to the fact that while a better diet can arrest further graying of hair, it usually cannot cause pigmentation to come back in the hairs which have already turned gray. Although hair that has turned gray due to infections are known to grow back in the normal colour once the infection has been cured.
So, the first step for you , I believe , will be to consult a dermatologist for an examination and blood tests. If no abnormality can be determined and the graying is put down to a non-specific cause like stress, there will be no treatment except to try improving her diet to prevent further graying.
I hope this helps.
