my husband 43yrs old has had a cold for 6 days. He has been smoking since he was 14yrs old. He told me last night that the past 3 days he has hacked up blood in his smoker flum. he has no lung pain, back pain. He is under alot of stress 1yr now from work, and personal. what could this be?

The cause of the blood could be from minor blood vessels bursting following a bout of coughing, however in a smoker of this length of time then we have to consider more serious possibiities and I would like him to see his doctor as soon as possible.

If it is something serious like a lung cancer then the earlier this is picked up the better. He needs to have a chest xray and a clinical examination as soon as possible. It may turn out to be nothing more serious than an infection but it needs to be looked at.
