I had a urinary infection about two weeks ago - ...

Sent to Health Experts October 18, 2006 7:53 a.m.

I had a urinary infection about two weeks ago - usually get one at least once a year. I have taken ofloxin each time and have tolerated the side effects. This time, I took it for one week and could no longer tolerate the loss of appetite, nightmares, and loss of sleep. Since I did not take the ofloxin for the full 10 days, it seemed the infection has returned. I am leaving to go on vacation Oct. 21st. My doctor is not in the office today and am wondering if there is something else I could request, something non-prescription or is there another antibiotic in the world besides ofloxin for this infection? I am in a bind since I am scheduled to leave this Saturday. Can you advise?

There are two alternative antibiotics used to treat urinary tract infections. One is trimethoprim (an ingredient in Septrin) and the other is nitrofurantoin. They are more old fashioned than ofloxin but can be quite useful. Unfortuantly you will need a prescription for these.

Over the counter remedies containing sodium or potassium citrate can neutralise some symptoms but will not clear a bacterial infection on their own.

Does this help?
