HPV in the shower question

Sent to Health Experts October 23, 2006 8:38 p.m.

I share a shower with a female roomate that tested positive for HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). I've heard that if you share a shower you could get the virus but it is called a Sexually Transmitted Disease and I don't have sex with her. Is there a chance that I could pick it up in the shower or not?

Hi,

There is no evidence that contaminated toilet seats, doorknobs, towels, soaps, swimming pools or hot tubs, can transmit HPV. However, some unexplained cases of HPV lesions do occur and one should never rule out the possibility that an HPV infection may have been caught in a non-sexual event.
