What could it be?
Sent to Health Experts March 13 10:28 PM

I have a rectovaginal fistula - they haven't figured out why I have it. I don't have diverticulosis nor IBD. My symptoms are very achy joints, fever, nausea, back aches, diarreah and constipation, colic pain, my eyes are extremely dry and hurt - I don't know what else to do, I am tired of tests that have no results. Would you know of anything else that it could be?

I am 37 - Yes I have an 18 year old and a 7 year old - yes I do use tampons. My fistula was a pin hole size - I had surgery in November and it didn't work - I am having surgery again - it's worse now - I have stool coming out into my vagina

I forgot to add I've had the fistula for about 6 months - and yes I had vaginal deliveries. They thought about Crohn's disease because the symptoms are so close - but I just received the results and it came out negative...I have bowel obstruction, my belly swells up - it becomes hard.

Hello,

There are two types of RVFs - a high one which usually indicates origin from the bowel like Crohns disease or IBD. And low one which indicates that the chances of the RVF originating from the vaginal side is high.

In your case, since the fistula is so small, I suspect that you have a low RVF.

In most cases, the cause of RVF is usually trauma due to childbirth. This is unlikely in your case since you have had the fistula for only about 6months. So, the likelihood of a vaginal infection causing the RVF is high. Vaginal Infection by Lymphogranuloma Venereum (which causes the disease chlamydia) can lead to an RVF. Tubercular infections can also caue RVF. Chlamydia infection is very common in women who use IUCD or tampons.

Since Crohns and IBD has been ruled out by colonoscopy, I believe that you need to be investigated for chlamydia and tuberculosis. If you do have these conditions, you will need medicines to treat them before you can proceed to surgery.

I am glad the doctor responded - but I was looking for more responses...I wasn't quite satisfied with his answer.

Reply to Dr.M.D.Mazumdar, MD's Post: I will give Dr. Mazumdar the $30 for his effort and for being the ONLY physician to respond - it's a little odd that its said that there are thousands of physicians and only answered - so I'm very disappointed and will not use this website again...
