Hi,
H Pylori is a bacteria that lives in the stomach. It is present in about 50% of all people.
The main significance of H pylori is that it can cause stomach ulcers. It doesnt cause them in all the people it is present in, but it causes them in quite a significant percentage.
If a person is diagnosed to have a stomach ulcer, he/she will then be tested for H Pylori infection. This is done most commonly with a blood test, and can also be done with a breath test. This is done at the doctor's recommendation.
If the person with the ulcer is shown to have H pylori infection, he will need antibiotics along with the other anti ulcer drugs so that he can have a proper healing without chances of recurrence.
So having the H Pylori positive doesnt mean anything other than the person will need some extra medicines along with anti ulcer drugs. In those who do not have any ulcers but have been detected with H pylori, it only means that the person has a slightly higher chance of having ulcers. But of course, upto 50% of the population have this, so its not a cause for worry.
