I had a tooth extracted 6 days ago. Two days later I had a dry socket. The dentist packed it. Yesterday the dentist removed that packing and then put a paste up there. The pain was terrible. Today the pain has been almost non-existent. However, I have had what feels like a sinus headache, pain and pressure in my ears and jaw joints. The headache pain/pressure is in my forehead and top of my head. I have suffered for years with chronic sinusitis. How do I know if the pain is from sinusitis or an infection from the extraction? I have heard a lot of scary stuff about extraction infections, and I'm wondering if I should panic. I do have sinus drainage and a terrible taste in my mouth. However, again, there is little to no pain around the extraction site itself. I used sinus rinse and it has relieved all of the pain and most of the pressure. How can I tell which is causing my symptoms? Would the dentist have noticed infection when he was packing it?

I do not think , that you have an infection from the extraction.

You have all the characteristics of sinus headache.

Infection, from the extraction, has the following important symptoms like:

fever

and abnormal swelling ,around the site of the extraction

Symptoms that you do not have

If the dentist, had noticed infection, when he was packing it,he would have prescribed you antibiotics.

You must not panic, but if the pain continues, you must go to your dentist, who will place a medicated dressing,on the extraction site.

In the meantime, to allow the area ,to heal, you should eat soft foods, soups, liquids, at least the first two days.

Other important, thing is that tooth extraction infection symptoms ,occur ,in the first 24-48 hours, after the extraction was done.

I have had the medicated dressing twice, which is why I was concerned that maybe it was infected now. The extraction hole is almost completely closed now. How long do I have to worry about infection typically? That way I can gauge whether it is sinus or from the extraction.

One last question. Would infection symptoms come and go? I felt good from 6:30 this morning until about noon and then the headache started and then around 4:30 the earaches and jaw pain started. After the sinus rinse only the headache remained.
