I am having the longest and most irregular period of my life. I am on birth control and have been for years. This past month, i switched from Estrostep (which I've been on forever) to Ortho-Lo for the first time. Two weeks into my cycle, I missed 2 days of pills in a row. I followed the instructions and on the 3rd day i took two... and also got my period. I figured my body just assumed it was time for my period and that as I would continue taking the pills, the bleeding would stop. Day 4, I took two more pills so I was back on schedule. I continued to take the birth control as prescibed all the way to the end of the month, and I am still bleeding. Even though I am taking the pills every day, my false period continues to be just as strong as it was on day one. It is now day 14. I have now also developed a yeast infection from the prolonged exposure to damp mentral blood that is always next to my skin. I'm supposed to start a new pack of pills in 5 days. What is this?

jahin,

Any bleeding that lasts 10 or more days needs to be evaluated by a doctor to determine the cause. If you are changing one or more pads or tampons in an hour or less, this is considered excessive bleeding and needs to be checked out immediately as it can lead to anemia. Period abnormalities can be due to many things including stress, weight gain/loss, thyroid, hormonal imbalance, infection, illness, medications, polyp, cyst, amongst other reasons. The only way to know for sure exactly what is going on is to see your doctor for an exam and testing. It's very possible that you have a hormonal imbalance occurring. If this is the case your doctor will check your hormone levels via blood test, and possible change your dosage. As far as a yeast infection is concerned, if you have never had one before you will need to see your doctor for confirmation. Things that encourage the overgrowth of yeast include using antibiotics, having high estrogen levels such as during pregnancy, hormone replacement use and birth control pills, having diabetes, having an impaired immune system, using corticosteroids, being overweight, having the genital area exposed to moisture for a long period of time, using an IUD, and having a partner with symptoms of a yeast infection. Make sure you eat a balanced diet, and drinking acidophilus milk or eating yogurt that contains live Lactobacillus organisms can also be helpful in keeping a balance. Cotton underwear is also helpful in preventing moisture from developing. Make sure after going to the bathroom that you wipe from front to back. Avoid use of any types of feminine sprays, talcs etc as they can also disrupt the normal balance. Also avoid any type of scented toilet paper. You can read more about yeast infections here
