Question

vaginal itching, pain, stinging

Sent to Health Experts December 10, 2007 7:55 a.m.

I have had vaginal itching, pain, stinging for about 5 years now. I've seen my gyn about and he stated it was chronic something or other. He did a biopsy and gave me Triamcinolone Acetonide creams to use. I have seen a # of doctors for this same problem and they all just give me some kind of cream or other. The cream helped @ first, not anymore. I'm at my wits end over this. It wakes me from a dead sleep, needless to say, I get very little sleep and not functioning well, of course. It seems to be a very itchy rash, with stinging, like somethings biting me, no smell, so I know its not a yeast problem. I've had them before. Any ideas? Please help!

Hi,
The fact that an infection has been ruled out in your case, the most probable diagnosis is Lichen Simplex infection. This is a skin condition occurring from chronic irritation of the vulva. The symptoms are constant irritation, itching and skin rash. Due to the constant irritation, the skin in the vulvo-vaginal area becomes thick. The cause is sensitivity to an allergen in the form of detergent etc. The treatment is avoiding the causative allergen and a mild steroid ointment.
