How can u tell when a Women has an infection of some type?

How do you know when a womans vagina has an infection or something close? I could smell something not right (bad) and sometimes after intercourse there would be some white stuff (not semen) almost cottage cheese like - that was on the base of my penis. Almost as if I had just scrapped it off the inside of her walls during intercourse. It scares me sometimes and even kills the mood - I dont know anything about the female body in that way so, I hope u take this serious as I am a little concerned and dont want her to be unhealthy. And myself - please send me as much info as possible and HELP!
