Toddler Vaccination Question

Sent to Health Experts January 01, 2005 1:29 a.m.

my son is 20 months and has not yet been vaccinated for measels, mumps or rubella. Tomorrow he will see his grandmother and friend who just returned from South Africa on Wednesday. Neither appears to be sick with anything. I assume they've been vaccinated. Is that a problem?

REPLIED Check Mark

The fact that your son has not been vaccinated is a problem no matter whether it's family he's visiting or not. Many people in public places could pass diseases on to him that could kill him.

Your local health department will provide vaccinations free of charge if you cannot afford a regular pediatrician.

If your son remains unvaccinated, it will be impossible to enroll him in daycare, elementary school and team sports.

I hope that you will look further into this soon.

Thank you for the response, he is going to vaccinated for all the above, but has been unable to this point due to constant ear infections that have since ceased.

I do need to know however if measles, mumps and rubella can be transmitted from someone returning from a country such as South Africa, who happens to be healthy. If someone is vaccinated, can they still transmit?

If they have received their vaccines prior to the trip and are healthy, the risk should be no greater than meeting a stranger on the street who had just visited South Africa.

Again, the main question however is can a person who has been vaccinated, somehow carry and transmit anyway, or a person who is not vaccinated but is not sick, can they carry and transmit.

I would assume the risk would not be greater if they had been vaccinated. The stranger on the other hand I wouldn't know if they were vaccinated or not, so I don't really understand your last comment.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

No they cannot if they have been vaccinated.  The disease would have to thrive in their bodies in order to infect others.  It will not if they were adequately vaccinated.
